Singing Lessons

Studio Sessions

Welcome to my studio! A place where anyone and everyone is welcome. An exciting update: I am building a home studio! For the time being, I will be teaching in a temporary studio set up from my home address, as seen in the picture. At the time of your lesson, I will come out to greet you and invite you into where the magic happens.

To give you an insight as to what each lesson looks like, here is some information on what this service entails:

Every session is different and tailored to suit your ability and needs. We will work closely and consistently to address exactly which area of singing you feel needs to be improved the most, but in each lesson we will cover vocal techniques alongside working through songs of your choice. I will encourage you to try new styles and techniques and push you out of your comfort zone if you are comfortable for me to do this.  I believe it is important to let my clients lead the lesson too so that they feel confident with what we are doing. In studio lessons, students will have the opportunity to record vocals in a professional recording booth with high end equipment, and will receive an mp3 file of songs recorded to take home.

Typically I structure lessons in the following way:

To start, I will always ask how you are and I am keen to hear about your week. I feel that this is essential to help you relax before we continue, and I appreciate that singing and music can be a vulnerable and emotional experience for some. It is important for me to connect with you and vice versa, as it allows me to build an understand of how you learn and the best approach for me to teach you going forward. I take in to consideration how you are feeling in each session and will aim to make you feel more positive before you leave!

Following this, we will decide on a song to work on (or continue with a song from previous lessons) and I will prepare backing tracks and lyrics for you.

Once we are all set up for the session, we will then proceed with a vocal warm up which I will tailor to your range and ability. Each exercise serves a purpose, and we will start off with a couple of gentle scales before moving onto warm ups that work on improving certain techniques. For example, some may find it trickier to transition between registers, so I will make sure to include this as part of the warm up if this applies to you. We will also work on exercises that are specific to the song that we are working on, as each song requires a different approach. For example, belting involves a much more extensive warm up to work on the correct placement and breathing technique you will need before singing a more vocally demanding song.

When we have completed your vocal warm up, we will begin working on the song you have chosen, either in sections or as one. For beginners, I will assist you with timing your breaths, and for more advanced students I will encourage you to use your knowledge and skills to do this independently. I will listen carefully and pick up on the smallest details that will allow you to improve, even if it is one word from a particular section. Over time, this allows you to recognise various techniques by yourself and you will learn to adjust your approach without needing as much guidance. I will occasionally ask you what you think went well and what could be improved after singing through multiple sections in order to encourage your independence as a vocalist, so that when you are performing in the future you will have the tools expand your ability.

We will work on your chosen song up until the end of the lesson, and within that hour I can guarantee that you will feel a sense of achievement, or alternatively the determination to practice something new before your next lesson!

I find that this structure is well suited to most, but if you would prefer to focus on a specific technique for the entirety of the session without working on a song I am more than happy to assist you with this.
